1. When giving a consequence, choose a natural consequence that is related to the behavior. For example, if your child scribbles on the table, have them scrub the scribbles off instead of sending them to time out.
2. Validate your child’s emotions, label the emotions, and empathize with your child. This will help your child recognize emotions in themselves and others and help them process what they’re feeling. For example, if your child is visibly sad you can say, “you are feeling sad because your toy broke. It’s okay to feel sad. Sometimes I feel sad too”.
3. When you talk to your child, get down on their level. Kneel on the ground or sit on a chair until your heads are level. This immediately helps your child to feel more connected with you.
